When I founded Hook & Barrel Magazine, I had a dream but no idea what I was getting into. Perhaps, as I look back, this was our key to success. But we were shooting from the hip, “faithing” it until we made it, wild and unconventional, somewhere between crazy and genius—and things were beginning to fall apart internally.
Before long I found and devoured Jocko Willink’s and Leif Babin’s book, Extreme Ownership. I’ll save the book report, but the general gist is: “Man the hell up and take responsibility for everything. You want to know the problem? Look in the mirror, buttercup. And here are some real-world examples of how to solve your issues from the battlefield and the boardroom.”
Our cover story interview with Jocko Willink is meant to encourage you, no matter how old or how young you are, to take extreme ownership. As you’ll find from Jocko’s wise words, it’s all on you, and your results will always rest firmly on your leadership—both self-leadership and/or the leader of your team, your family or whatever capacity trust is placed in you.
