Prop masters on movie sets. How do they decide which firearms actors use?

Walther has been a longtime staple of the James Bond movies, HK has made plenty of appearances over the years, and the Springfield Armory M1A appears in Jack Reacher. There’s clearly more thought that goes into a movie character’s firearm than simply picking a gun that looks good on camera.
